A point-of-care (POC) device is compact and fast. Fingerstick sample, results in minutes, minimal training. Great for clinics, urgent care, or bedside testing. But the test menu is narrower, the per-test cost tends to be higher, and results are better suited for screening than deep diagnostic work.
The question isn't "which is better?" It's "which fits your workflow?"
One more layer: under CLIA, these instruments can fall into different complexity categories. That determines who's allowed to run the tests and how much quality control you must document. Check the complexity classification before you commit. And make sure the analyzer is FDA-cleared (or CE-marked, depending on your market) for the tests you plan to run.
I once saw a clinic buy a POC device expecting it to replace a full blood analyzer. It couldn't keep up with the volume. Worse than expected. They bought the bigger system four months later.
4. What Should I Check Before Buying a Patient Lift?

An autoclave sterilizes using saturated steam under pressure. The steam transfers heat to every surface inside the chamber, killing bacteria and spores. The CDC's standard reference describes a typical gravity-displacement cycle as roughly 121°C (250°F) at 15 psi for 30 minutes. Pre-vacuum cycles can run at 134°C for 3–5 minutes.
Simple in concept. A ton of room for error in practice.
Our September 2022 incident: we packed the chamber too tightly. Instrument pouches stacked flat, not leaving space for steam to circulate. The biological indicator came back positive — the load wasn't sterile. We had to redo everything, delay procedures, and have a very uncomfortable conversation with the clinic director.

- Don't overload. Steam needs room to reach every surface.
- Place pouches on edge, paper to plastic, so air can escape.

Here's my reverse-validation story. In 2018, I pushed to buy a refurbished blood analyzer. The price? $3,200 less than a new one. I checked the specs, approved the purchase, processed it myself. The result came back a month later: the previous owner had skipped required software updates, the reagent supplier wouldn't guarantee compatibility, and we couldn't get a service contract. The machine wasn't broken — it was unsupported.
We retired it after eight months. $3,200 wasted, plus a rushed rental and a serious dent in my credibility. A lesson learned the hard way.
